GO&D Bio-Medical Department
An integral part of Global Operations and Development (GO&D)/Giving Children Hope USA is the Biomedical Department. The existence of this department hinges directly on the donations made by individuals, various hospitals and medical institutions. Because of the generous contributions from partners and the expertise of in-house technicians, this vital department can carry out its life-saving work around the world.
The 40,000-sq. ft. Distribution Center provides ample room for equipment and workspace
The GO&D biomedical team consists of a very accomplished Director and skilled technicians. Director, Anatoliy Andreyev, was previously a Hospital Administrator in St. Petersburg, Russia and Chief Engineer at the Institute of Toxicology in Russia. He comments, Our job here is important to medical endeavors because we provide hospitals and doctors with the electronics to heal the body and treat patients in a more proficient way. If you have no medical instruments, what do you do? The provision of life saving equipment and training equips medical personnel to reach out with much greater capacity.
In order to achieve this purpose of saving lives, the GO&D Biomedical Department works diligently to refurbish and retrofit medical equipment for its worldwide relief and development projects. Every piece of equipment and machinery that is donated must be thoroughly cleaned, and evaluated and if necessary, repaired and tuned so that all medical apparatus shipped oversees are in proper working condition. In many cases the voltage must be changed so that it can conform to a country’s electrical standard. Also, for the larger more complex equipment a manual will be provided and sometimes translated for the beneficiary.
The Biomedical Department procures equipment ranging from hospital beds and wheelchairs to fetal monitors and ultra sound scanners. According to Director Andreyev, the most widely asked for equipment is patient monitors, defibrillators, electrocardiographs, x-ray machines and sterilizers. On a smaller scale, doctors overseas are in need of surgical scalpels, surgical blades blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes and suture materials. Thanks to generous contributions and the hard work of the Biomedical Department, during the first months of 2004 GO&D was able to ship $1,277,960 of medical equipment and supplies to Nigeria, Peru, Russia, Iraq, and The Philippines.
