Medical Library
GO&D (Global Operations and Development) is working to expand the support structure for doctors, hospitals and medical clinics in countries that are in desperate need of knowledge resources.
Many of these countries suffer such serious shortages of medical personnel that they cannot spare their doctors or nurses to leave their positions for additional training.
GO&D can help by providing a core medical library that they can access. This small collection of print and multimedia information resources in medicine and nursing will allow these clinicians to improve patient care and advance their knowledge.
With the help from St. Joseph Hospital, Orange, Ca., OSI Foundation and MediMultiMedia, we can help improve the quality of life in the countries with the greatest need.
You can help by donating your current medical journals, textbooks and multimedia materials. These items are not for resale or duplication nor will Global Operations and Development infringe on copyright. Our intent is to recycle knowledge to those with the greatest need rather than to waste excess printed medical journals in our landfalls. Because the cost of shipping these materials is high and the physical space allotted to house these materials in these countries is small, we must restrict our request for donations to titles published in 2000 and more recent and to titles that fit the description of a "core medical library collection." In other words, we are looking for more general type books such as Harrisons Principles and Practice of Internal Medicine or Hurst's The Heart, but not more specialty oriented titles such as Diagnosis and management of skin cancer. With the help of the library staff at Burlew Medical Library, St. Joseph Hospital, Orange, we have developed a list of specific journal titles that we would like to collect published in the last 5 years . Burlew Medical Library has agreed to act as a drop- off point for journal titles that meet these criteria. For more drop off information, you can contact Julie Smith, MLS, Library Manager at 714 771-8291 or email (jsmith@sjo.stjoe.org). For further information on the medical library, please contact Juliana Dity at 714 523-4454 or email (juliana@godaid.org).
